80 February 2016 www.bahrainthismonth.com movies Directed by: J.J. Abrams Starring: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley The Plot: This is a movie where you will want to know as little as possible before you go in (a deliberate ploy established by the movie’s marketing team). As background, though, 30 years have passed since Return of the Jedi and Luke Skywalker (Hamill) has disappeared off the face of the … galaxy. The First Order – a successor to the evil Galactic Empire, led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) – and the Resistance, led by military general (apparently a promotion from the rank of ‘princess’) Leia Organa (Fisher), are scouring the galaxy for him. Caught up in the search is scavenger Rey (Ridley) from the planet of Jakku, renegade Stormtrooper Finn (Boyega) and spherical droid BB-8. Worth Watching? Whether it’s for the nostalgic tinges like the opening crawl and John Williams’ evocative score, or for the new elements like the determined Rey or the happy-go-lucky Finn, The Force Awakens is a delight from start to finish. The fact that the film has managed to live up to the ridiculous hype and deliver a movie that does not just solely rely on pandering to the original trilogy for cheap sentiment is testament to both the fantastic cast and the visual feast served up by the director. Film: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rating: ***** VERDICT: Brilliant return that lives up to the hype … and more. Deadpool Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former special forces operative turned mercenary, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who, after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humour, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Zoolander 2 When the world’s most beautiful musical celebrities are systematically assassinated with formerly-famous male model Derek Zoolander’s (Ben Stiller) iconic ‘Blue Steel’ look on their faces, Interpol recruits Derek and his friend Hansel McDonald (Owen Wilson) to infiltrate a new and different world of high fashion in order to put a stop to it. Meanwhile, Derek’s rival Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) is set free and is seeking revenge.
