Gifted with a distinctly powerful voice and incredible oudplaying ability, Abdu’s talents were clear from an early age and he was discovered while still a teenager in the early 1960s after singing on the local radio. Five decades on, ‘The Artist of the Arabs’, as he is widely known, is still going strong. His collaborations include some of the biggest poets, composers and musicians in the Arab world. His repertoire includes hundreds of songs and albums that clearly show the strong influence of traditional Hijazi music and spiritual chants on his style. In fact, in making this genre more mainstream, Abdu is widely credited for helping to preserve this important heritage within the GCC and Arab musical landscape. The concert will feature some of the artist’s most beloved songs, which he released over his illustrious career, from early classics to more modern hits spanning the golden era of Arabic music of the 20th century to today. The show starts at 8pm and is suitable for ages 10 years and above. Tickets are available from Virgin Megastore. Established by cellist Herrmann Gauthier in 2008, the bi-annual festival, in collaboration with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in India, maintains a philosophy of performing special large-scale orchestral arrangements by a small chamber orchestra in a relaxed and friendly way that promotes intercultural dialogue. To date, the Artie’s Chamber Orchestra has played more than 100 musical works worldwide. A special selection of some of the greatest masterpieces by artists such as Wagner, Mendelssohn and Mozart will be played in Bahrain under the patronage of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities.
