Bahrain This Month - December 2016

36 December 2016 www.bahrainthismonth.com Inspire Bahrain is offering a crash course for those interested in filmmaking. With the availability of goodquality cameras on smartphones, great things are possible; even full-length feature films have been made on phones. The idea behind the event is to give people a basic set of skills in order to make a film from start to finish. Techniques will be taught, such as how to frame shots, landscapes, close-ups, time lapses and interviews. Participants will also be told how to record audio and synchronise with video. Jason Carter – who has made over 50 films, including music videos and short films – will teach the class. Finished films will be between two and five minutes long and will be hosted online through Vimeo or YouTube. The course is open to teens and adults and under-11s are welcome to attend with their parents. It costs BD50 –bring a friend and get 25 per cent cash back if they sign up for a course. Inspire Arts Centre in Shakhoora La Fontaine will host an exhibition titled ‘Memories’ by Maya Jashanmal Lalvani. Life has culturally, emotionally and geographically connected Maya’s identity to Bahrain, India, America and Turkey. Her work and choice of materials reflect this diversity. A collaboration of ideas and objects flows through her recent works, featuring wooden blocks, boxes, paper, found objects, old photographs and ancient texts superimposed with her drawings, filling the layers of her art pieces. Not wanting the old memories to vanish, her work reflects this desire to retrieve and capture images, textures and colours, to reclaim and keep the fragments of remembrance alive. The exhibition opens on December 4 at 6pm, followed by a sit-down dinner with live piano music at 8pm, priced at BD20.
