Genesis Motors is the luxury arm of Hyundai Motor Company and, while the two brands share the same DNA, they are as different as chalk and cheese. It’s no small feat to establish a unique brand identity when you share a stable with one of the world’s best-known marques, and that’s just one of the reasons I fell in love with the Genesis flagship model, the G90. The vehicle’s distinctive design exudes confidence. Refined use of chrome elements also serves to create an elegant appearance, along with standard 19-inch alloy wheels. In the rear, chrome dual asymmetrical exhaust tips integrated in the lower bumper balance the vertical LED taillights, providing a modern and luxurious feel. The company says that the G90 focuses on ‘Human-Centred Luxury’ with cutting-edge innovations – and I’m not going to argue. From the easy-to-use layout of driver controls and genuine, premium material selection, to meticulous craftsmanship, virtually every element of the interior focuses on the passenger’s comfort. Perhaps my favourite element was the airconditioned seats, which also have a heating function that no doubt will come in very handy as we see temperatures fall in the Kingdom this winter. Make no mistake about it, this model not only looks great, it performs to a high standard. Powered by a choice of 3.3-litre V6 or 5.0-litre V8 engine coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, this vehicle handles like a hot knife through butter. Despite it’s size and weight it is surprisingly nimble. Thanks to a number of different driving modes, you can select the one that best fits the situation and your mood – and I spent most of my drive in sport mode, because, well, why not? When it comes to safety, the G90 sets the bar pretty high. There is a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge technology that brings together systems such as Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Cruise Control with Stop/Start, Smart Blind Stop Detection and Lane Keep Assist. Most drivers in the Kingdom know the pain of being stuck in traffic for prolonged periods of time. It’s boring, stressful and, more often than not, uncomfortable. However, for me, the huge queue on the Sitra Highway gave me ample opportunity to play with the car’s infotainment system. It’s intuitive and easy to use – a welcome change from some of the more complex systems I’ve tried over the years. I was able to set up my Bluetooth and stream music in a flash, and utilising the navigation was effortless. Acceleration, braking and cornering all get top marks, too. In fact, traversing the notorious Alba Roundabout was a doddle in the G90, a true testament to its ability. Parking is also hassle-free in this vehicle thanks to a plethora of cameras, sensors and other on-board technology.
