The Royal Bahrain Endurance Team will be taking to the tracks for two championships this month. Firstly, on December 3 the High Highness Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Endurance Ride will take place. This race contains a distance of 100 km for local stables and a FEI international ride with a distance of 85 km. The second racing event will be held on December 24 and is in slightly belated celebration of National Day. The championship, titled the ‘National Day Endurance Ride’ is for seniors and offers two distances; 85 km or a considerable lengthier 120 km for the more advanced riders. E Call 17 836-199. This month brings the race for which the Bahrain Road Runners are probably best known — the Cross Island race. It’s an exhilarating run from the south-east of Bahrain to the south-west, which takes the participants from coast to coast, through desert terrain and past beautiful scenery. With the cooler weather it’s far more achievable for many to complete and in previous years huge numbers of participants have entered. This year, to spice the race up a little more, the organisers have added a ‘coast to coast’ element, which forces you to start with your fingers touching the sea water at the start line and end the race in the same way — although, if at the end you feel like diving in to cool off, by all means go for it!
