Bahrain This Month - December 2011

38 October 2011 BTM happeningsclubssocieties Alison Coldridge The Bahrain Garden Club has sprung into action for two major competitions being launched this month for all who love to weed, pot, trim and prune. We are relishing in much cooler weather, which means the Kingdom’s gardens are finally able to flourish and produce delicious fresh fruits and vegetables in addition to luscious flowers and plants. So it’s time to get outdoors and get potting! The Bahrain Garden Club (BGC) is holding two competitions this month for all members, and non-members to take part in. Both events seek to achieve the objective of the BGC by assisting in preserving the environment, maintaining beautiful surroundings and building awareness of agriculture. Competition one: Most Beautiful Garden in the Kingdom The first event, which is already open for entrees, is the annual ‘Most Beautiful Garden in the Kingdom’ competition. Remarkably, this year marks the 47th edition of the competition which has been running every year since the BGC began. Anyone can enter their garden into the contest, with the following elements judged; the landscape, diversity of plant elements, green surfaces, flowers, a variety of trees, the use of an irrigation system, attention to quality of plants and fertalisers used. There will be numerous prizes offered to the top gardens in each category such as: the best kept container garden, best kept lawn, best kept display of shrubs and trees and the best kept experimental garden. An addition to this year’s competition is an eco-friendly element. A sub-competition will also take place to award the best display of an environmentally-friendly garden and also a small garden photography exhibition. The closing date for all entries is on January 6. Competition two: Floral Exhibition and Experimental Gardening The second competition has been created for schools to assist in educating them about the importance of tending for a garden. Children, together with their classmates and teachers, can try their hand at growing and manipulating plants, vegetables and flowers. The contest has been created in the fairest way possible, with different categories for ages, schooltype, and ability. There is also a wide variety of categories for the product entries including the creation of a miniature garden, a plant grown from beans in a pot, flower arrangements and vegetables grown in a garden. The floral exhibit and experimental gardening competition will be held on January 14, with the exhibition open to the public from January 16-18 and a presentation of the winner’s trophy’s will be held on February 9 and 11.
