Bahrain This Month - December 2011

BTM December 2011 11 Dear Readers, The end of a tumultuous year is in sight; a year none of us expected back in January, which now seems a long time ago. In the more than 32 years I have resided in this land I call home, I’ve experienced many ups and downs along the way. This past year, though, has probably been the most emotionally draining. As 2011 draws to a close we start to think about the festive season; thoughts of close family and friends come to the fore. In particular, I think about the children. Unlike previous editions of First Word, I will keep this one short. Whatever issues we may have faced over the past 10 or so months, as adults we owe it to our children to put aside any differences we might harbour, to find the common ground around which to pull together and build a brighter future. Anything less and we will have broken the unwritten covenant that governs us as parents and custodians of the present — we cannot allow our own prejudices to permeate the lives of the next generation. So, my wish is that we spend time with our families this month, assess what is important to us and commit to restoring the great way of life the Kingdom has to offer, and has done so dating back to the time of Dilmun.
