MOVIE OF THE MONTH The Adventures of Tintin RATING: DIRECTED BY: Steven Spielberg STARRING: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig THE PLOT: Having bought a model ship, the Unicorn, for a pound off a market stall, Tintin is initially puzzled that the sinister Mr Sakharine should be so eager to buy it from him, resorting to murder and kidnapping to join him and his gang as they sail to Morocco. He has bribed the crew to revolt against the ship’s master, drunken Captain Haddock who tells Tintin a legend from over three hundred years ago. There is something flat and robotic and a little bit aimless about the movie. The opening credits, which playfully pastiche the original drawings with simplicity and wit, are actually more interesting and exciting than what follows. The extended bike chase in Morocco makes the trip to the cinema worth it. VERDICT: Fans of the comic may be disappointed. It’s entertaining nonetheless.
