The Group CEO of KIMSHEALTH describes himself first and foremost as a clinician, having initially planned to concentrate on practising medicine rather than managing hospitals. After completing his residency training in the United States, he was asked to become co-director of a hospital medicine programme. Working alongside a colleague, he helped develop the initiative into a successful model that was later implemented across the wider healthcare system. Dr. Sahadulla says: “That was my first administrative role and I continued growing in various clinical leadership positions in the US.” After 26 years in the country, he decided to pursue a new experience in the Middle East and joined KIMSHEALTH. The organisation now operates across six countries, with Bahrain serving as its headquarters for the GCC. Bahrain was the first Gulf country in which KIMSHEALTH established a presence. Dr. Sahadulla attributes its selection as the group’s regional base to the Kingdom’s supportive business environment, government bodies, ministries and the National Health Regulatory Authority. As Bahrain’s healthcare sector continues to develop, he believes the greatest opportunity lies not in simply opening additional hospitals, but in strengthening specialised clinical services. Many private hospitals currently provide similar secondary and lower-level tertiary care to a relatively small population. Greater differentiation would allow healthcare providers to develop recognised areas of expertise and offer more advanced treatment. Dr. Sahadulla says: “More hospitals are not required, but expanding clinical services and expertise is where the opportunity lies.” Maintaining consistent standards as KIMSHEALTH expands across different markets depends upon a clear set of priorities. Clinical excellence, patient safety and quality of care guide the organisation’s decisions, supported by what Dr. Sahadulla describes as a “patient first” approach. He explains: “It is the care that drives the business and not the other way around.” His background as a physician remains central to his leadership. Rather than concentrating solely on commercial operations, he continues to view decisions through the perspective of patient care. His clinical experience also allows him to communicate effectively with other doctors and understand the practical challenges involved in delivering healthcare. KIMSHEALTH’s extensive network of hospitals has enabled it to bring specialist knowledge and expertise into Bahrain. This gives patients access to higher levels of care without necessarily travelling abroad for treatment. Dr. Sahadulla describes this model as a form of “reverse medical tourism”, with expertise brought into the Kingdom rather than patients being required to seek it elsewhere. India’s established reputation for healthcare has influenced this approach across Bahrain and the wider GCC. Collaboration between India and Bahrain extends beyond clinical knowledge and specialist treatment, encompassing medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, consumables and diagnostic services. Dr. Sahadulla says: “The collaboration extends beyond bringing clinical expertise to the region.” He believes this relationship can support access to affordable equipment and high-quality pharmaceuticals while strengthening the capabilities of healthcare providers throughout the Gulf.
