BTM August 2012 107 KEERTHANA LOUIS Lebanese restaurants are plentiful on our island. This venue offers authentic fare with modern touches, which makes it all the more inviting. Celebrate the Holy Month of Ramadan at Abd El Wahab, the benchmark by which Lebanese cuisine on the island is judged. The daily Iftar buffet is priced at BD15+ and there is also an à la carte or set menu available for Sohour. Live cooking stations every day add a bit of excitement to your meal, while live entertainment from Tuesday to Saturday offer a chance to relax with melodious tunes. The venue Named after the street on which the original restaurant was situated in Beirut, Abd El Wahab is conveniently located in Moda Mall. This two-storey modern restaurant, with its mysterious exterior, is an impressive mix of tradition and modernity inside. Step through the large heavy doors and you quickly realise why this 300-seat venue is increasingly full for lunch and dinner. The walls are accented with black and white photos of old Lebanon, a testament to where it all began. Yet, the quality and efficiency of the food, the staff and the ambience are nothing but modern day perfection. It is the perfect balance between old and new. With polished floors, high ceilings and a contemporary vibe with Middle Eastern touches, the designers have really worked hard to keep both a Lebanese, Middle Eastern tone without losing its attraction for an international clientele. The cuisine The kitchen is run by chef Louis Khauand, who prepares the Lebanese fare. Working with a kitchen team numbering over a dozen, the food is always fresh and delicious. The bread, which accompanies every meal is made in-house, and is as much fun to watch through the open kitchen as it is baked, as it is to eat. For house specialties, try the hot starter of chicken livers marinated and sautéed with pomegranate, garlic and lemon juice for exceptional flavour. If you are impressed with the food, the service at Abd El Wahab will also have you returning again and again. The restaurant is teeming with staff, who despite their numbers, do not intrude on your dining experience. Arabicspeaking waiters work in an organized chaos of speed and efficiency. There is of course many bilingual and Englishspeaking serving staff on hand to ensure that international clients are looked after accordingly. Residents and visitors alike will soak up the ambience and enjoy the quality of the cuisine available. The restaurant is managed by Elias Nohra, who works hard to make sure diners are kept happy. And with prices which seem exceedingly reasonable, considering the venue and the quality, he is a man who is going to be kept very busy.
