The last month before the temperatures really soar brings plenty of outdoor events to keep you busy across the island. From superstar Jason Derulo visiting as part of Spring of Culture to appearances by Arabic greats Ilham Al-Madfai and Ziad Bourji and the return of Tribfest, there truly is something to suit every taste. And, if you fancy something a bit more refined and indoors, I may well see you at Bahrain National Theatre for the opera Don Giovani. April is the month when BTM traditionally engages with the Kingdom’s British community to take our annual look at how relations are developing – they’re good, in case you wondered. In a departure from our usual chat with the British Embassy boss, this year we bring you a look at what British Ambassador, His Excellency Simon Martin, actually gets up to on a day-to-day basis. We also share the thoughts of Defence Attaché, Cdr Paul Windsar RN, who has a historic family connection with the island. And we introduce musical duo Dar Disku, who are a great illustration of the links between the two countries. Elsewhere, in our Interview section, you’ll find a group of innovators. Mohamed Isa was a teen who hated the spotlight but has now become an extremely successful public speaker and author. Noor Mohammed has turned his boyhood passion for model aircraft into a business and is now aiming to get kids interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). And Seema Haqiqi has put her own bespoke candle business on hold to launch a wax recycling project aimed at helping orphans and reducing waste. In the motoring section, Dick Potter gives his verdict on the Ferrari Portofino, a car he found as impressive as its Italian namesake. And, in dining, Liz has been getting more than her fair share of gastronomic joy this month – she’s the first person to review degustation gem Mahonia and she also tried out a new vegan menu.
