April 2016 77 www.bahrainthismonth.com As the anniversary celebrations start in earnest, HE Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, shared his view of this special friendship. With his position at the heart of government for more than 10 years and as a former ambassador to the UK, Shaikh Khalid is in a unique position to assess the relationship between Bahrain and Britain. He says: “This is a very important anniversary for us here in Bahrain; it celebrates the beginning of the relationship between the UK and not just Bahrain but the whole Gulf region. “Here in Bahrain we are proud that it’s been a relationship that has provided partnership for peace and stability for Bahrain and the wider Gulf. With the UK we have achieved peace at sea and this relationship has allowed us to take steps forward to becoming a member of the international community. “The relationship was the start of a major transformation of the Gulf region towards becoming an active partner within the world and we’re looking forward to working together for another 100 years. “We support the UK as a true ally throughout the ages. Through the last 200 years the British have stood side-by-side with us, defending the region and helping it evolve to where we are today. “For example, in our international relationships, we have a very strong relationship with India today which initially came about through our relationship with Britain. “It is fair to say that Britain has helped to define the whole region.” A True Ally Shaikh Khalid with William Hague, former British Foreign Secretary, during a visit to the Kingdom British Embassy Dinner The British Embassy hosted the BBBF’s Great British Balti Curry Night event at its premises.
