96 April 2016 www.bahrainthismonth.com unitedkingdomsupplement It’s not official yet but BTM has got the gossip on lots of other events planned to celebrate the bicentennial. As well as April’s Food Month, there is an ongoing programme of events being planned throughout the year with the British Embassy, Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bahrain British Business Forum and the British Council working together to showcase the bicentennial in a way that every resident of the island can enjoy. We can give you a sneak peak of what to expect in the coming months, though many details are still to be confirmed. There’s a treat in store for military music enthusiasts towards the end of the month with a visit from the Royal Marines Band. The band is planning to carry out school visits and workshops as well as public performances at Lulu Hypermarket, Hidd, the Prince Khalifa Park and Arad Fort. April will also see a curatorial study programme for women, more information on this will be on our website as soon as it’s available. April 27 sees the celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday with a garden party at the British Embassy with quintessentially British fare on offer. From May 5, for approximately three weeks, Bahrain Financial Harbour is expected to play host to an exhibition of the works of UK artist Jack Melville, the ex Saatchi’s art director who’s well known for his portraits of the great and the good (and sometimes not so good) of the entertainment world, from Paul Weller and David Bowie to Tommy Cooper and Wilko Johnson of the band Dr Feelgood. May 14 will see British education under the spotlight with a teachers’ conference and the end of the month is all about heritage with a range of activities that will likely include a photographic competition, art school and museum event. An English Language Teaching programme is also expected to launch in late May offering the chance for official certification. June continues the heritage theme with a series of events and there will be BritishBahraini Ramadan stalls organised in conjunction with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities. Later in the year we can expect visits from sporting celebrities and there are also rumours of an exciting fringe-style festival, a shopping festival and cultural concerts possibly in conjunction with Bahrain International Music Festival. Organisers are in the process of setting up a website to promote all the events and we’ll announce this and any further news online at www.bahrainthismonth.com as soon as it’s available.
